- Go Snorkeling/Diving – Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Shark Ray Alley and Mexico Rocks – Three of the best snorkeling sites along the barrier reef. There are also a number of dives sites outside the reef. Daily trips are readily available from the many dive shops on the island. The Reef Runner Glass Bottom Boat Trip is highly recommend for families.
- Spend the day at Secret Beach – One of the most beautiful beaches on the island is about ten miles from town. Blue shallow waters for swimming. There is a number of Bar & Grills along the beach. Great place to see sunset.
- See the island on Golf Cart – The best way to explore the island is on golf cart. Rent one for a day and cruise around town and Northern Ambergris.
- Go fishing – Fishing along the barrier reef is fun. You may also arrange a trip to go flat fishing for bone fish and tarpons on the leeward part of the island or go deep sea fishing for tunas, marlins and barracudas outside the barrier reef.
- Watch the Sunrise from the beach – If you are an early person you will marvel the sun as it rises from the reef horizon.
- Visit Rocky Point – This is where the reef touches land. It’s very scenic and good for snorkeling. We recommend to hire a guide since it is quite a distance from town. We also recommend to do a full day trip. You can do some fishing and have a picnic on the beach.
- Check Out the House of Culture – Take some time to learn about the island’s history by visiting the House of Culture. Then take a stroll along the boardwalk and mingle with the island folks as they go around doing their daily chores.
- Aerial Sightseeing Tour: Take an aerial sightseeing tour of the island. From the air you get a good bird’s eye view of the island and the barrier reef.
- Have lunch at El Fogon – Belizean food cooked on a fire hearth. Try their salbutes, whole fried fish, conch fritters, and many other island dishes. Elvis Kitchen on Pescador Drive you cannot miss. Something good is always cooking at Elvis. El Patio on Barrier Reef Drive offers great food in a beautiful spacious ambiance. Pineapples at Ramon’s Village Resort is a nice place to enjoy breakfast and lunch and at the same time enjoy the view of the barrier reef and the cool sea breeze. I must say that you will find good food almost anywhere in Belize. So you may want to try one of the many mom and pop restaurants that you will see as you roam the island.
- Visit the Blue Hole – The world famous Blue Hole is a must for divers. A sunken cave in the middle of the ocean with stalactites and a reef fringe. It’s a world heritage site and was explored by Jacques Cousteau. Amigos Del Mal, Ambergris Divers and Ramon’s Dive Shop offer day trips to the Blue Hole. It’s a long day trip but it is worth it. If you do not dive, the reef around it offers good snorkeling. The trip also makes a stop for wall diving and a stop at a nearby island to see the booby birds. Also Maya Island Air offers sightseeing tours to the Blue Hole. A highly recommend tour. You will see the splendor of the barrier reef and marvel the small cayes that popped out of the sea.
- Grab a beer at Sandy Toes – An island pub on the beach. Cold beers and finger food on the beach with a nice swimming area. For some nightlife go to The Truck Stop a roadside bar and food court just a short ride from the bridge going up north. If it is full to capacity go to Rum Dog a beautiful palapa bar over the ocean. Just before you reach The Truck Stop is a street going towards the sea go straight down and you will find Rum Dog. There is a big sign on the roadside but if you have trouble finding it just ask someone for directions.
- And why not? Stay at Las Amapolas – Casitas at El Cocal. Just 4.5 miles north from town in a secluded beach are two beach houses overlooking the Caribbean Sea and the Barrier Reef. It’s a little piece of paradise on Ambergris Caye.
